University Club General Manager Named 2011 Restaurateur of the Year
Thursday, February 9, 2012 - John LaRocca, general manager of the University Club of MU and University Catering & Event Services, has been named 2001 Restaurateur of the Year by the Chapter. LaRocca, whose more than 30 years experience includes time with Marriott International, independent restaurants and both city and country clubs, also helped form the first hotel and restaurant management internship program, which allows students selected to receive real-world training in all areas of operations. Save the Date for the 27th Annual Taste of Mid Missouri

The date has been set for the annual Taste of Mid Missouri! Mark your calendar for Monday, March 19, 2012, from 5:30pm - 8:00pm, for this showcase of the delightful creations offered by area restaurants and vendors. Members receive their first booth for FREE!! Interested vendors must complete and return the Booth Registration to secure your spot in this ever popular "foodie fest". More information to come soon on this fundraising event that has generated over $125,000 in scholarship funds for students in the MU Restaurant & Hotel Management program.

Owners of Hackett Hot Wings Receive 2011 Restaurateurs of the Year Honor
Thursday, February 9, 2012 - At the annual awards dinner in January, the Chapter honored Floyd & Jacqueline Hackett, Owners of Hackett Hot Wings, in Joplin, as the 2011 Restaurateurs of the Year. Chapter Establishes Joplin Tornado Restaurant Recovery Fund
Tuesday, August 9, 2011 -
 The Joplin/Southwest Chapter of the Missouri Restaurant Association has established a Joplin Tornado Restaurant Recovery Fund.  We welcome donations and the support of our fellow MRA members throughout the state.  All contributions will be greatly appreciated as the fund is being be used to help our MRA members in the Joplin/Southwest Chapter who have suffered partial or full losses of their restaurants.

  • The fund will help pay expenses not covered by insurance, state or federal programs, such as insurance deductibles; 
  • The first days of business losses that are not covered by long-term business loss policies; 
  • Menu printing and other incidentals; 
  • This is a fund to help our members after insurance, SBA, FEMA and other immediate resources are exhausted; 
  • Members will submit written requests for monies from the fund, reviewed by the Joplin/Southwest Board of Directors, and distributed on a    case-by-case basis.

The devastation caused to Joplin and surrounding areas by the May 22nd  tornado is insurmountable and will require stringent, long term efforts to rebuild.  All donations to the Joplin Tornado Restaurant Recovery Fund are tax deductible. Chapter Announces Restaurater of Year and Company of Year for 2011
Monday, December 19, 2011 - On Tuesday, December 13, the GKCRA announced that it will honor Jason and Shannon Pryor, owners of Pizza 51, as its 2011 Restaurateurs of the Year and The Roasterie Coffee Company as its 2011 Company of the Year, during its annual Inaugural Ball next month. These awards are the highest honors a member can receive from the GKCRA. Restaurant industry leaders from the Greater Kansas City area decide on the two annual awards after reviewing dozens of nominations from members that they receive in the fall. KCMO Health Department waives Requirement of Food Handler Certification
Wednesday, November 23, 2011 -  In a notice recently received by the GKCRA, the KCMO Health Department is waiving the requirement that all food handlers must be certified through a formal food handler training course, as stipulated in Section 8-304.11(I) of the City's Food Code, pending final action by the City Council.

Effective immediately, it will no longer be required that food handlers be certified. All managers on duty in any Kansas City food establishment licensee will be required to have formal training either through the ServSafe Certification program, Manager Training program offered by the KCMO Health Department, or an equivalent. For additional information, please refer to the provided sample renewal invoice for food establishment permit holders.
