When the National Restaurant Public Affairs
Conference took place in Washington D.C. in
September, the Missouri Restaurant contingent made
calls on their Senators and Congressman on the day
they were debating the nation’s largest bailout package.
The conversations we had that day were interesting
to say the least. We kept all our appointments and
brought up the issues concerning our industry. Card-
Check Legislation is a big concern! Today employees
are entitled to a private ballot election when deciding
whether they want union representation in their
workplace. Elections are overseen by the National
Labor Relations Board, which has numerous procedures
in place to ensure fair, fraud free elections.
Because of these safeguards employees can cast their
votes confidentially, without peer pressure or coercion
from unions or employers.
If Congress passes the “Employee Free Choice Act”
employees lose their right to private-ballot elections.
The bill would establish a so-called “card-check”
union organizing system, in which a majority of
employees simply sign a card in favor of union representation.
Recent polls show strong majorities of the public want to keep protections in place. Private ballots are a basic American right and
employees should not have to reveal to anyone employers or union show they exercise their right.
The National Restaurant Association urges members
of Congress to co-sponsor the Labeling Education
and Nutrition Act of 2008 (LEAN Act) which will
provide a national nutrition labeling standard for
foodservice establishments with 20 or more units.
This bill would provide a uniform nutrition standard
that allows consumers access to detailed nutrition
information that meets their needs while providing
clarity, consistency and flexibility for restaurants on
how that information is provided and will provide
legal protection for those restaurants that abide by
the law. This bill was introduced by Senator Tom
Carper (D-DEL) and Senator Lisa Murkowski (RALASKA)
and Representative Jim Matheson (DUTAH)
introduced companion legislation in the
House.
We also spoke on Restaurant Depreciation, ADA
Notification, Credit Card Acceptance, Health Care,
Litigation Fairness, Minimum Wage Increase, Paid
Sick Leave, Work Opportunity Tax Credit. Many
thanks to our Board members that made the trip to
Washington to represent Missouri Restaurants talking
about these
important issues
that confront
our Industry.
